BA BMS blokken in periode 1
Periode: september 2024 - oktober 2024

1. Diet, nutrition and health (BBS3013) (12 ECTS)
This course focuses on the role of nutrition in health maintenance, optimized performance, disease prevention later in life and sustainability. The knowledge collected in this course will be integrated to define a potential role of nutrition in personalized intervention approaches and how to perform scientific research related to nutrition.
2. Immune responses in health and disease (BBS3014) (12 ECTS)
This course addresses various immune-related processes that play a crucial role in disease. Students will study both proper immunological reactions as well as immunological reactions that are out of balance, resulting in chronic inflammatory diseases. Students will gain knowledge on host pathogen interactions, immune therapy for cancer and the latest diagnostic techniques: genome-wide DNA and RNA sequencing, metabolomics and microbiome analysis.
3. Neurosciences and –control (BBS3015) (12 ECTS)
The aim of this course is to offer students in-depth knowledge of the Bio-molecular aspects in Neuroscience. Students will gain insight into the latest knowledge on mechanisms of brain function in health and disease, including its effect on controlling the body and its movement. This track may be recommended for students who plan to enrol in a Master Neuroscience or movement sciences.
4. Pharmacological interventions (BBS3016) (12 ECTS)
This course introduces the basic pharmacological and toxicological principles of drug therapy and deals with a broad range of aspects that needs to be taken into account for the evolution of population-based drug therapy to a tailor-made approach for an individual patient. Students will learn concepts of pharmaco*kinetics and pharmacodynamics. Moreover, they will explore different factors influencing the toxicity and effectiveness of drugs. This course will focus on chromatographic techniques needed to analyze drugs and their metabolites.

BA BMS blokken in periode 2
Periode: november 2024 - december 2024

1. Physical activity and health (BBS3023) (12 ECTS)
This course covers various aspects of the relationship between physical activity, health and performance. In this course students will learn how physical activity, be it intense activity or sedentary behaviour, affects health at a molecular level and how molecular adaptations affect people and their health. This will be studied in the context of a range of non-communicable, lifestyle-related diseases, ageing, and cognitive performance over the range of a lifetime, enhancing or regaining functional, daily or sports performance.
2. Infection and immunity (BBS3024) (12 ECTS)
The global Covid crisis has made us again aware of the devastating effects infections can have on global health. Alternatively the human body is inhabited by a large number of bacteria, viruses, archaea and unicellular eukaryotes called the microbiota, which all together play a crucial role in maintaining human health. In this course students will study what determines the outcome once a microbe enters a body. This knowledge on host-microbe interactions will be integrated to define new ways to prevent deleterious infections or to define new personalized interventions based on e.g. the manipulation of the microbiome.
3. Omics technologies and their analysis (BBS3025) (12 ECTS)
The course aims to provide an overview of the ‘omics’ technologies. It will provide state-of- the-art insight of methods that can be used to analyze genes, their transcripts, proteins and metabolites within a sample and difference between samples. The course will introduce students to genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic techniques, and the analyses of output-data that can be employed. Examples of the application of omics approaches in a variety of relevant biological systems will be presented.
4. Environmental health and analytical chemistry (BBS3026) (12 ECTS)
This course will be designed to help students understand the influences and impact of environmental factors on human health. The course covers basic principles and core concepts from toxicology, epidemiology, exposure assessment, risk assessment and risk management. Attention is given to chromatographic techniques, (capillary) electrophoresis and spectroscopy (NMR, EPR and mass spectrometry). Bioinformatics tools needed to deal with the data will be addressed.

BA BMS blok in periode 3
Periode: januari 2025
ECTS: 6
Critical Review of a Biomedical Intervention(BBS3003) (6 ECTS)

The content of the course depends on the choice of the individual student. Students choose a topic related to one of three trajectories focussing on either drug, nutritional, or physical activity interventions. The emphasis is on critically reviewing the literature on a chosen topic and related research question. The necessary knowledge and skills for this academic project were already obtained in previous courses throughout the bachelor. A critical narrative literature review will be written in multidisciplinary groups of 3-4 students supervised by an experienced researcher (supervisor). Besides the narrative literature review, an individual and personal reflection report on the process of this project will be written as well. Students meet with their supervisor 2-3 times during this course. The supervisor finally assesses the group report, as well as the individual reflection report.
