How to reset a suburban water heater? ›

For tank-style water heaters like Atwood and Dometic, and most tankless systems, turn the system off and back on to reset your 12-volt panel and circuit board. For tank-style water heaters like the Suburban brand, simply press the reset buttons located in the exterior compartment of your system.

If your Suburban water heater will light, stay fired, but won't get the water hot it's the thermostat. If running on propane check for +12-14V on the input of both the thermostat and the over temp relief switch, if they're both present but there's no voltage on the output side of the thermostat then it's dead.

There may be insulation packed around the thermostat. Some models have a plastic cover over the wires surrounding the reset button and temperature dial. Note that modern electric water heaters have two heating elements and two thermostats, but usually only one reset button.

Inspect the water heater itself to confirm that there is not a visible leak or another obvious issue causing a problem. If the circuit breaker has not been tripped and if the water heater does not appear to be leaking, it's likely you need to reset the electric water heater.

After locating the heating element, test the element's electrical resistance with a multimeter. A working heating element should have a resistance between ten and 32 ohms. After testing the water heater element, reassemble the unit. If the heating element is faulty, you should call a contractor to fix the issue.

120 degrees Fahrenheit is the safety recommendation against scalding, but 140° is the common default setting.

Make sure the replacement element has the correct voltage and wattage rating for your water heater. You can find this information on the flange or terminal block of the heating element or on the water heater's data plate.

Testing the Heating Element with a Multimeter:

Place one probe of the multimeter on the loosened screw and the other probe on the remaining screw attached to the face of the heating element. The multimeter should read between 10 and 30 ohms if the heating element is working correctly.

The model and serial number information can be located by opening the water heater access door on the outside of your RV. The silver colored data plate with black printing is located on the right side of the metal control housing as you face it from the outside.

Your thermostat monitors the water temperature in your tank and turns off the heating element when it reaches your set temperature. However, if one of these thermostats malfunctions, it may get stuck ON and fail to turn off the element it serves, which causes the reset button to trip.
