'Noragami' Manga Ending Explained: Here's What Happened! (2024)

Noragami is a manga written and drawn by the mangaka duo Adachitoka. It was published from December 6, 2010, to January 6, 2024, in Monthly Shōnen Magazine and compiled into 26 volumes (plus 2 specials) as of the time of writing this article. A 27th volume is on the way. On January 6, 2024, after 14 years of publication, the Noragami manga series came to an end. A total of 109 chapters were published and the story that started in 2010 and that has attracted so many fans around the world is now over. In this article, we are going to tell you what happened in the end and what it all means.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • After 14 years, the Noragami manga was concluded on January 6, 2024, when the final 109th chapter was published. The story was officially concluded, and Noragami is not an ongoing series anymore.
  • The manga concluded with the ultimate fight against the gods of calamity, which was a truly major event that put the world in a state of chaos, but the story ultimately had a happy, although somewhat bittersweet, ending.
  • With the heroes triumphing, the world returned to its normal state. Hiyori is back to leading a normal life and has forgotten about some major events, while Yato made a name for himself via Twitter.

What happened in Noragami Chapter 109?

Some time after the conflict with Bishamonten is over, Yato suddenly disappears. Yukine and Hiyori are worried, but Kof*cku and Daikoku reassure them – something like this happens every now and then with Yato. In fact, he was kidnapped by Nora on behalf of his father, for whom he now carries out contract killings. As has happened so many times before, Yato resigns himself to his fate while Hiyori initially looks for him but then slowly forgets him.

Eventually, Yato is sent to the underworld to save the god of fortune, Ebisu. He traveled to the underworld to obtain an Izanami brush with which one can control Ayakashi, something Ebisu has been striving for for many generations. Finally, Yato and Ebisu have to fight together in the realm of the dead to fight off Izanami, who doesn’t want to let them go again. Meanwhile, there is turmoil in the Celestial Empire due to Ebisu’s attempts to name and control Ayakashis. The fortune gods are arrested, and a death sentence is passed on Ebisu. When Kazuma, Yukine and Hiyori – who is just remembering Yato when she meets Yukine by chance – find out about this, they free Bishamonten.

All of this was a lead-up to the major fight against the gods of calamity, which took place in the two-parter that was Chapter 108. Of course, the heroes managed to win in this conflict and ultimately, the world was saved, but after the thrilling Chapter 108, the world was back to normal in Chapter 109.

We found out that Hiyori doesn’t remember most of the things that happened, as her memory is fuzzy; she did not forget it completely, but her mind is in a daze. The same goes for Fujisaki. Hiyori is now a doctor and an intern in a hospital. On the other hand, Yato’s story almost ended when he saved Hiyori’s life, but he was “kept alive” thanks to Twitter, so people kept knowing about him; the only ones who actually knew what he did and how much he helped are the reincarnated deities he had helped. He now works in the real world, dealing with demonic attacks, as he rids the world of such calamities.

It all seemed to be a lovely, peaceful world now, but with Hiyori not remembering Yato anymore, the ending seemed a bit bittersweet until the very end, when Hiyori finally remembered Yato’s name and the two friends met once again.

Noragami ending explained

Well, the ending of Noragami is not an overly complex one, although we have to admit that it was a bit rushed. The final chapter seemed more like a summary of what happened rather than a proper ending, but the authors made it clear what actually happened in the end, and these are the main points:

  • Hiyori survived in the past and grew up to become a doctor, but she does not remember everything that happened in the past.
  • The same thing happened to Fujisaki, who suffered a similar fate as Hiyori and is now alive but has a fuzzy memory when the past is concerned.
  • Yato almost disappeared due to saving Hiyori, but he made a scene in public so he was photographed and uploaded to Twitter, which resulted in his surviving as well.
  • After the defeat of the gods of calamity, the world returned to normal, although not without sacrifices having been made.
  • No one save for the reincarnated deities remembers exactly what Yato did to save the world.
  • Yato is still in the world of the living and takes care of the trouble caused by the monsters.
  • In the end, Hiyori manages to remember Yato’s name – filling the void she had in her memories – and the two friends reunite once again.

As said, this was an expected happy ending to the Noragami saga, without many shocks. Fans were somewhat disappointed as the ending seemingly lacked depth, but it was a very satisfying ending that brought the story to a proper conclusion. Most manga titles actually end in such a fashion, and in that aspect, Noragami is not an exception.

The authors could’ve provided us with some additional panels that add some extra layers to the ending, but even with such a structure, Chapter 109 is a satisfying conclusion to a story that we had been following for 14 years. So, thank you for everything!
