It’s 2024, and you don’t have to settle for an uncomfortable or ill-fitting bra. While there’s often a time and place for wearing traditional padded underwire bras and even minimizer bras, you can still get plenty of support and comfort from one of the best wireless bras—no matter your cup size. Yep, there are plenty of stellar bra brands to choose from and a wide selection of styles on the market, whether you’re looking for bras for small busts, bras for large breasts, or anything in between.
Meet the expert: Deborah SanMiguel, director of design at Maidenform, a bra and undergarments brand.
Modern wireless bras work for all sizes and shapes. “In the past, wire-free bras offered less support due to technological limitations,” says Deborah SanMiguel, director of design at Maidenform, a bra and undergarments brand. “But now wire-free bras have been engineered to offer the same support as traditional underwire bras.” Wireless bras also come in many different looks, including lacy styles, those with racerback straps, and padded options for lift, so you’re not stuck with wearing one style.
Regardless of the type you choose, make sure the fit is right. “You know your bra cup size is correct if you do not have gapping at the neckline and underarm of a bra cup,” says SanMiguel. “Your band size is correct if the bra band doesn’t ride up or dig in uncomfortably.”

How to choose a wireless bra
Experts Lisa Curbello, owner of The Bra Chick and Elisabeth Dale, founder of The Breast Life previously shared their top tips for choosing the most comfortable bras with Prevention. Their advice, along with SanMiguel’s suggestions below, can help you choose the best wireless bra for you:
✔️Make sure you’re wearing the right size. If you’d like to find your bra size on your own, SanMiguel shares the best method below, but Curbello suggests getting fitted by a pro if possible. After over 20 years of professionally helping women find their bra size in various styles and brands, Curbello says about 85% of women who visit her are wearing the wrong bra size—leading to discomfort and keeping them from finding their most flattering fit.
✔️ However, be sure to experiment with sizing. “All styles and brands have different fit standards, so you may very well wear two or three sizes, depending on the manufacturing and materials,” Dale explained. Trying on different sizes and styles is the best way to find your perfect fit.
✔️ Think of your bra as an investment. While bras range from super affordable to ultra luxurious, Curbello recommends looking at the whole picture instead of just the price tag. Sometimes, “It’s worth spending a little more on a perfectly-fitting, high-quality bra that will give you the lift you want and the comfort you need,” Curbello said.
How to find your bra size
First, measure yourself. If you’ve worn the same size for years, it’s time to recheck because your body changes over time due to life events such as weight gain, weight loss, and pregnancy. “Measure yourself while wearing a well-fitting bra that is lightly lined with little to no padding,” says SanMiguel.
Wrap a soft measuring tape around your chest, above the bust. This is your band size. If it’s an odd number, round down to the closest even number. For your cup size, measure around the fullest part of your bust. Keep the tape level. If this measurement is at a half-inch, round up. This is your bust size.
Now subtract your band size from your bust size. The difference is your cup size, which is:
- 1= Cup size A
- 2= Cup size B
- 3= Cup size C
- 4= Cup size D
- 5= Cup size DD
- 6= Cup size DDD
- 7= Cup size G
- 8= Cup size H
Every woman is an individual, and there can be variations in sizing between brands and styles, so try on to be sure you’re choosing the most comfortable fit with no pinching or gapping. You may need to choose a different cup or band size in different brands or styles.
Is it better to wear a wireless bra?
“Bras without wires can help avoid pinching, digging, or poking,” says SanMiguel. But it’s strictly personal preference. Some wearers say wired bras provide a more supportive feel, while others can’t stand the poking, pinching, and digging-in sensation of wired bras. Truly, the only way to know which one is best for you is to try it on.
The bottom line is that if you go through the day without remembering you’re wearing the bra, it’s a good fit! If you’re tugging at it all day long, it’s time to reassess and try a different model or size.
